Vietnam: Deadly flooding continues in north /update 1
21 killed by landslides and flooding caused by heavy rains in northern provinces; further rain forecast through June 28
Event
Heavy rains, ongoing since June 23, continue to impact northern Vietnam. Flooding and landslides have been reported in the provinces of Ha Giang, Lai Chau, and Thai Ngyuen, where hundreds of houses have been destroyed and numerous roads damaged. In Lai Chau and Ha Giang, at least 21 people have been killed and nine others reported missing; 12 people have been injured.
Further heavy rain is forecast for the region through Thursday, June 28, along with thunderstorms and strong winds. Additional flooding and landslides are thus possible in the coming days (and weeks) as the monsoon season continues.
Context
The summer monsoon season in northern Vietnam, which runs from May to October, regularly results in deadly flooding and landslides.
Advice
Individuals in Vietnam are advised to follow all instructions as issued by local authorities (e.g. possible evacuation orders) and follow local weather forecasts. In the event of further flooding, remember that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous; 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult.
