22 killed by landslides and flooding caused by heavy rains in northern provinces; rain to subside through July 1

Warning

Event

Heavy rains, ongoing since June 23, continue to impact northern Vietnam. Flooding and landslides have been reported in the provinces of Ha Giang, Lai Chau, Thai Ngyuen, and Quang Ninh where hundreds of houses have been destroyed and numerous roads damaged. In Lai Chau, Ha Giang, and Quang Ninh at least 22 people have been killed and 11 others reported missing as of Thursday, June 28; 12 people have been injured.

Rain is forecasted to subside through the weekend, although a few thunderstorms may occur. Additional flooding and landslides are thus possible in the coming days (and weeks) as the monsoon season continues.

Context

The summer monsoon season in northern Vietnam, which runs from May to October, regularly results in deadly flooding and landslides.

Advice

Individuals in Vietnam are advised to follow all instructions as issued by local authorities (e.g. possible evacuation orders) and follow local weather forecasts. In the event of further flooding, remember that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous; 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult.
