Vietnam: Police detain US citizen during protest June 10 /update 1

Event

On Sunday, June 10, a US citizen was reportedly arrested by security forces during a protest in Ho Chi Minh City. According to local sources, the individual was participating in a demonstration against the planned development of three special economic zones in Vietnam. Dozens are Vietnamese protesters were also arrested during the demonstration. As of Thursday, June 14, the US citizen's current location is unknown. Additional similar protests are possible in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, and other cities in Vietnam in the near-term.

Context

The planned special economic zones in Van Don (Quang Ninh province), Bac Van Phong (Khanh Hoa province), and Phu Quoc (Kien Giang province) would reportedly provide investors with more economic incentives than offered elsewhere in the country. Foreign investors would be able to lease land for 99 years in these zones under the proposal.

Visitors to the country should note that taking pictures of political protests is prohibited under Vietnamese law. Foreigners who take photographs during demonstrations or other political activities risk detention.
