Cambodia: Large protests in Phnom Penh July 27 /update 1

Large political protests in Phnom Penh July 27; heightened security measures and localized traffic disruptions expected

Warning

Event

Large political rallies are set to take place on Friday, July 27, beginning at 06:00 (local time), in Phnom Penh. Additional political demonstrations are expected in the capital and other urban areas around the country in the days leading up to the general election on Sunday, July 29. Heightened security measures and traffic disruptions are anticipated around all election-related demonstrations and events.

Context

Current Prime Minister Hun Sen of the ruling Cambodian People's Party (CPP) is widely expected to win the election, with the main opposition party banned and its leaders encumbered by legal cases that have blocked them from running. A court dissolved the main opposition, the Cambodia National Rescue Party, in 2017 after it was found guilty of plotting to seize power, allegedly with the support of the US. Rights groups allege the case could be an attempt to discredit the opposition and intimidate opponents.

Advice

Individuals in Cambodia, especially in Phnom Penh, are advised to monitor developments to the situation, avoid all demonstrations as a precaution, and anticipate transportation disruptions in the vicinity of protests. Adhere to all directives issued by the local authorities.
