Chile: High air pollution in various areas July 25

High levels of air pollution are reported in various areas of Chile as of the morning of Wednesday, July 25. Purple “emergency” alerts are in effect in the communes of Puerto Montt, Padre las Casas, Los Angeles, and Chillán. Red “pre-emergency” alerts are in effect in Coyhaique, Temuco, Talcahuano, Linares, Talca, and Curicó. Lower orange and yellow alerts are in effect in various other areas. These conditions could continue into the coming days. Driving and industrial restrictions are possible in the above areas.

High pollution levels can cause eye, nose, and throat irritation and aggravate cardiovascular and respiratory conditions (such as asthma). During periods of high air pollution the government typically advises against all outdoor exercise and recommends that schools cancel physical education classes. Vulnerable individuals - e.g. children, seniors, pregnant women, and people suffering from asthma and other respiratory issues - should be particularly cautious and consider wearing masks covering their nose and mouth when outdoors.

Pollution levels tend to rise in Chile during the (southern hemisphere) fall and winter period.
