Informational

Event

A new high-speed rail line in Yunnan province linking the capital Kunming and Dali was inaugurated on Sunday, July 1. The new bullet train service covers the 330 km (205 mi) at 200 km/h (125 mph), cutting the travel time between the two areas from five hours to less than two.

Context

Dali is a popular tourist spot visited by millions of people every year.

China's railway network is expecting around 650 million passenger trips this summer on its 121,000-km (75,000-mi) long network, which includes nearly 20,000 km (12,000 mi) of high-speed rail (HSR).

Advice

Foreign nationals traveling by train in China should be aware that they will need to present a passport when purchasing tickets as well as when boarding trains. As a reminder, petty theft is common on overnight trains.
