High activity reported at Sierra Negra (Galapogos) and Reventador (mainland Ecuador) volcanoes July 1

According to the Geophysical Institute of Ecuador, volcanic activity at the Sierra Negra volcano, located on the Galapagos island of Isabela, remains high as of Sunday, July 1. The volcano erupted on June 26, prompting evacuations of nearby areas; evacuation orders were lifted the following day. Visits to the volcano remain banned until further notice.

On a related note, high volcanic activity was also reported Sunday at the Reventador volcano, located on the Ecuadorian mainland approximately 90 km (55 mi) east-northeast of the capital Quito.

Context

The Galapagos Islands are a highly active geological area; Isabela alone is home to five active volcanoes. The La Cumbre volcano, located on the nearby island of Fernandina, erupted on June 17. The Sierra Negra volcano had previously erupted in 2005 and 1979.
