Hispaniola/Bahamas: Remnants of Hurricane Beryl July 10

The remnants of Hurricane Beryl are currently - as of 08:00 (local time) on Tuesday, July 10 - located over the island of Hispaniola, near the Haitian-Dominican border. According to the US-based National Hurricane Center, the weather system is expected to move in a west-northwesterly direction over the island, reaching the southeast of the Bahamas archipelago by the evening. Heavy rain is to be anticipated over the coming hours in these areas; associated flooding and landslides cannot be ruled out. The Dominican Republic’s Center of Emergency Operations (Centro de Operaciones de Emergencia; COE) has issued yellow alerts for the following provinces: Hato Mayor, El Seibó, La Altagracia, La Romana, Santo Domingo, Sánchez Ramírez, San Cristóbal, San Pero de Macorís, San José de Ocoa, La Vega, Monseñor Nouel, and Monte Plata. Lower green alerts are in effect various other provinces.

There is a 20 percent chance that the system could develop back into a cyclone within 48 hours, and a 50 percent chance of such a development within five days.

Context

Beryl was the first hurricane of the 2018 Atlantic season, which runs from June 1 to November 30 with the largest concentration of storms typically occurring between August and October. Researchers are predicting a slightly below-average hurricane season for 2018.
