Cambodia: Flooding in Stung Treng province (northeast)

Event

Thousands of people have been affected by flooding in northeastern Stung Treng province following heavy rain that caused a tributary of the Mekong River to flood the region for the third time in a month. The Sesan River overflowing its banks has forced residents of several villages to evacuate to higher ground as of August 22. Water discharge from a local dam may have aggravated the situation.

Context

According to Cambodia's National Committee for Disaster Management, at least 18 people have died and over 40,000 families have been affected by flooding caused by heavy rain since the end of July.

Individuals present in northeastern Cambodia are advised to postpone nonessential travel to Stung Treng. Keep abreast of local weather forecasts, anticipate localized flooding and associated road hazards, and adhere to any instructions issued by local authorities.
