Tropical Storm Bebinca brings heavy rain and flooding to Nan province overnight August 16-17; thousands evacuated

Event

Heavy rain brought by Tropical Storm Bebinca hit various areas of Nan province (north; population 500,000; capital Nan) overnight August 16-17. The districts of Pua - where the local Nam Yao River rose to its critical level of over 4 m (13 ft) - Santisuk, and Mae Charim were the most severely hit. Warnings for flash floods and landslides have been issued for dozens of villages in the province and evacuations have been carried out in 11. One person has been killed in flood-related electrocution accident.

Individuals present in the north of the country are advised to keep abreast of local weather forecasts, anticipate localized flooding and associated road hazards, and adhere to any instructions issued by local authorities.
