The Category 3 storm is located 1990 km (1234 mi) east-southwest of the island as of 23:00 (local time) on Wednesday, September 5, and moving at 17 km/h (10 mph). While the precise path is not known, Bermuda will begin to see dangerous surf and rip currents beginning Friday, with tropical storm-force winds possible by the evening of Sunday, September 9. Context

Hurricane Florence formed as a tropical depression off the coast of Africa, bringing tropical storm conditions to Cape Verde on August 30. It strengthened to a hurricane on September 4, making it the third hurricane of the 2018 Atlantic hurricane season. The western Atlantic experiences tropical cyclones and hurricanes from June through November.

Advice

Individuals in Bermuda are advised to monitor local weather reports, adhere to advice issued by local authorities, and refrain from beach or ocean activities; hurricanes can produce dangerous waves and deadly rip currents even at large distances from the storm.
