Police officials announced that clearing operations are ongoing in Kolkata on the morning (local time) of Wednesday, September 5, after the Majherhat Bridge collapsed the day before. At least one person was killed and another 25 injured in the accident. According to local officials, traffic has been suspended through Diamond Harbour Road in the Taratala area. Vehicular traffic towards southwest Kolkata and South 24 Parganas is also being diverted through the Port area and Circular Garden Reach Road. Train service remains suspended as of 08:33 but may be restored as early as Wednesday afternoon. An investigation into the accident is ongoing. Transportation disruptions are expected to continue in the area over the coming hours and days.
