India: Heavy rain to affect Kerala until September 30

Heavy rainfall expected to affect the Kerala state until September 30; flash flooding and related disruptions possible

Warning

Event

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of heavy to very heavy rainfall in Kerala state until at least Sunday, September 30. A "yellow alert" has been issued. High waves are also expected along the coast. Flash flooding, landslides, interruptions in telecommunications, and transportation disruptions are possible in the coming hours and days.

Context

India experiences severe rain during the monsoon season (June to October). Monsoon rains frequently cause flooding, landslides, population evacuations, and transportation disruptions. This new episode of heavy rain comes after the worst flooding in the state's recent history; at least 488 people died from flooding in Kerala over the summer.

Advice

Individuals present in Kerala are advised to keep abreast of local weather forecasts, expect transportation disruptions, and adhere to any instructions issued by local authorities. Do not attempt to drive on a flooded road. Please be advised that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult - and that floodwater may contain wastewater or chemical products; all items having come into contact with the water should be disinfected and all food discarded.
