Fighting lessens further in Tripoli after armed militia groups sign a ceasefire on September 26
Event
The Tripoli and Tarhunah armed militias signed a ceasefire on Wednesday, September 26, leading to a fall in reported violence. Other warring parties involved in recent clashes in Tripoli have also been called on to adhere to the ceasefire.
Context
Fighting had already decreased in Tripoli since previous deals were struck between various militias on September 24. Tensions had been escalating since September 22, when GNA-backed Tripoli militias launched Operation Badr against the Seventh (Kani) Brigade, originating from Tarhunah. This followed the establishment of another tenuous ceasefire between local armed groups, initially brokered by the UN on September 4, which aimed to put an end to hostilities ongoing around Tripoli since August 27.
Following this return to relative calm, Tripoli's Mitiga International Airport (MJI) resumed operations on September 26.
