Airport administration announces reopening of Mitiga International Airport in Tripoli on September 26
Event
Tripoli's Mitiga International Airport (MJI) is scheduled to reopen its airspace and resume operations on Wednesday, September 26. It had been forced to shut down on September 17 when rockets were fired in its vicinity during clashes between armed militias in Tripoli. Flights to and from MJI had been diverted to Misrata International Airport (MRA).
Context
Fighting decreased in Tripoli after deals were struck between various armed militias on September 24. Tensions had been escalating since September 22 when GNA-backed Tripoli militias launched Operation Badr against the Seventh (Kani) Brigade. This follows the establishment of a tenuous ceasefire between local armed groups, initially brokered by the UN on September 4, which aimed to put an end to hostilities ongoing around Tripoli since August 27.
