Sri Lanka: Anti-government protest in Colombo Sept. 5

5,000 policemen deployed in Colombo to face anti-government protests; road restrictions expected throughout the capital city

On September 5, thousands of security personnel, including anti-riot forces, have been deployed through Colombo capital city, due to a large anti-government protest staged by the opposition. The policemen are dispatched near major locations, such as Colombo Fort, Railway Station area, the Lipton Circus in Town Hall and the Liberty Roundabout in Kollupitiya. The organizers of the protest have not disclosed the routes or the end destination of the planned march. Galle Road, Kandy Road, Negombo Road, High-Level Road and Battaramulla Road will be under particular security scrutiny today.

As a precautionary measure, individuals present in Colombo today are advised to stay away from the protest and any public gatherings, as they may turn violent. Anticipate road restrictions and severe transport incidents. Adhere to any instructions issued by local authorities.
