The Joint Opposition (JO) political alliance announced it will hold a mass rally in Colombo on Wednesday, September 5. Groups of supporters from around the country are expected to travel to the capital to participate in the demonstration. Participants will gather at Lipton Circus and Viharmahadevi Park from 14:00-17:00 (local time). While JO leaders have called for the demonstration to remain peaceful, clashes between protesters and security forces cannot be ruled out. Transportation disruptions are also expected in the city, particularly around the protest sites.

Context

Opposition leaders are calling for the current government to step down and for provincial council elections to be held.
