US/Bahamas: Tropical "wave" to bring heavy rain September 2-3

Event

A tropical "wave", or a disorganized cluster of thunderstorms, is affecting the western Caribbean and projected to move across the Bahamas and to the US on Sunday, September 2, and Monday, September 3. The storm system has a 50 percent chance of consolidating into a tropical depression in the next five days. Regardless of its designation, heavy rain is expected in south Florida and the Tampa Bay area in the next several days, with the US National Weather Service (NWS) warning of localized flooding and rain exceeding 10 cm (4 in) on Sunday and Monday. The storm system will then move into the Gulf of Mexico where it may form as a tropical depression before reaching the Gulf Coast, from New Orleans to panhandle Florida.

Tropical cyclones and hurricanes in the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico are common from June through November.

Individuals present in the affected areas are advised to keep abreast of local weather forecasts, anticipate localized flooding and associated transportation disruptions, plan alternate routes, and adhere to any instructions issued by local authorities. Remember that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult.
