Dominican Republic: Rising fuel prices trigger protests October 9 /update 1

Protests in Santo Domingo took place on Tuesday, October 9, in response to the continuing rise in fuel prices that has been recorded in recent months. Although no specific plans have been publicized, related protests and demonstrations are likely in the coming days and weeks across the country. In addition, the National Transport Federation (Fenatrano) trade union has threatened to call a strike and halt all public transportation if the government does not address the rising cost of fuel. Context

Prices of petroleum derivatives in the country have experienced increases this year. This has had a significant impact on certain vulnerable sections of the population, whose purchasing power continues to diminish by the week as a result. An increase in gasoline prices by almost 31 pesos (USD 0.63) per gallon and an increase in diesel oil prices by 43 pesos (USD 0.87) was recorded last year. In May 2018, another increase in fuel prices by 2-3 pesos (USD 0.04-0.06) per gallon was reported. Currently, regular gasoline is sold at 191.5 pesos (3.87 USD) per gallon.
