Gabon: Nationwide fuel shortages ongoing since September 26

Fuel shortages affecting the whole country since September 26; related protests possible

Warning

Event

Fuel shortages have been affecting the entire country, notably the capital Libreville, since September 26, resulting in long queues at gas stations as well as public transportation disruptions. Scuffles at gas stations cannot be ruled out.

The shortages have reportedly been caused by operational issues within the national refining company (Sogara), particularly due to obsolete facilities, combined with delays in the delivery of external supplies.

Context

Fuel shortages are common in Gabon, despite it being an oil producing country. In recent months, Gabon has been importing refined oil from other African countries, due to Sogara's inability to cover the needs of the local market.

Advice

Self-driving individuals in the country should try to stock up on fuel where possible to do so and consider keeping road movements to a minimum until the situation normalizes.
