Jamaica: Major flooding in Kingston October 23
Major flooding paralyzes Kingston afternoon/evening of October 23; residual disruptions possible October 24
Event
Flash floods paralyzed the capital Kingston on the afternoon and evening of Tuesday, October 23, leaving roads impassable and creating major traffic congestion throughout the city, notably the Corporate Area. Some buildings were flooded as well, following two hours of torrential rain that began at approximately 16:00 (local time). Residual road travel disruptions, compounded by ongoing construction works, are possible on Wednesday. However, no further rain is currently forecast for the coming days.
Advice
Individuals in Kingston are advised to allow for extra time to reach their destinations and to avoid areas still affected by flooding. Keep in mind that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult.
