Warning

Event

Some 15,000 people participated in an anti-far-right demonstration at Plaça de Sant Agustí in Valencia on Tuesday, October 9 (Day of the Valencian Community), demanding the release of political prisoners and denouncing the perceived complicity of the police vis-à-vis far-right activism. Clashes briefly broke out between the protesters and far-right groups before being dispersed by police. Lingering traffic disruptions are to be expected in the area over the coming hours and further incidents of violent unrest between protesters and far-right counterdemonstrators are possible.

Context

The protest was organized on the anniversary of leftist demonstrations in Valencia in October 2017, in which at least two people were wounded in clashes with far-right groups.

Advice

Individuals in Valencia are advised to monitor developments to the situation, avoid all protests and demonstrations as a precaution, and adhere to any instructions issued by the local authorities.
