Heavy rains caused flash flooding on the Spanish island of Majorca on Tuesday, October 9, killing at least eight people and leaving at least nine missing. Five of the deaths were reported in the Sant Llorenç des Cardassar area, located about 60 km (35 mi) from the capital Palma. Others have been confirmed dead in the coastal towns of S'illot and Arta. Telephone communications have been affected, bridges and roadsides have been severely damaged, and beaches are covered in debris. Regional authorities have said that seven roads in the area remain indefinitely cut off and continue to advise individuals in affected areas to remain at home, including students. Torrential rainfall and thunderstorms continue to affect the island, but conditions are expected to clear beginning on Wednesday evening (local time).

Individuals present in affected areas are advised to monitor local weather reports and avoid areas directly hit by flooding. Be advised that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult - and that floodwater may contain wastewater or chemical products; all items having come into contact with the water should be disinfected and all food discarded.
