Protests expected in Catalonia on October 3 in commemoration of a strike following the region’s independence referendum; transportation disruptions possible

Warning

Event

Protests are expected in Catalonia on Wednesday, October 3, to commemorate a general strike that was organized following the October 2017 independence referendum. Associated transportation and traffic disruptions are possible.

Associated demonstrations were held in Barcelona on September 29 and October 1, the anniversary of Catalonia's self-determination referendum, and resulted in clashes between police and protesters, as well as in severe traffic disruptions.

Context

Protests broke out on October 3, 2017, to denounce alleged police brutality that occurred during the referendum. The vote sparked political tensions between the Spanish government and supporters of Catalan independence; the results, in which 90 percent of the vote was in favor of independence, were ruled unconstitutional and annulled by the central government in Madrid.

Advice

Individuals in Catalonia are advised to monitor developments to the situation, avoid all demonstrations as a precaution, and adhere to any instructions issued by the local authorities.
