Sudan: Heavy rain and flooding in Red Sea state since October 24

Heavy rains and floods have been reported in Red Sea state, especially in its capital Port Sudan, since October 24. As of Monday, October 29, at least one person has been killed, five others injured, and hundreds displaced. In Arbaat, located north of Port Sudan, water and electricity services have been disrupted; a number of houses and shops have collapsed in nearby villages. Further rain is forecast in the coming days, which will likely result in additional damages, casualties, and disruptions.

Context

In Sudan, the rainy season typically lasts from June through October, and often leads to widespread and persistent flooding. Sudan also suffers from underdeveloped infrastructure, especially in rural areas, which makes it harder to respond to natural disasters effectively.

Individuals present in Sudan are advised to follow all instructions issued by local authorities (e.g. possible evacuation orders), allow additional time for travel, and monitor the situation via local media and weather reporting outlets. Be advised that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous; 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock an adult over.
