Protesters clash with security forces, erect makeshift barricades in Santiago; increased security measures and transportation disruptions anticipated

Warning

Event

Protesters have reportedly set fire to police cars and erected makeshift barricades on roads during the evening hours (local time) in Santiago on Thursday, November 15. Demonstrators have reportedly gathered in the vicinity of Plaza Italia and Bustamente Park where clashes with security forces were reported. Police have closed major roads in the city-center and public transportation is disrupted, including the total closure of Line 1 on the Metro.

Context

Tensions are high following the fatal shooting of an indigenous Mapuche man by Chilean police in Ercilla (Malleco province) on November 14. Police claim they came under automatic gunfire by suspected gang members and subsequently returned fire; although the circumstances of the incident remain unclear, residents claim the victim was herding cattle nearby. President Sebastián Piñera has called for an investigation into the shooting.

Advice

Individuals in Chile, particularly in Santiago, are advised to avoid the area and to adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities.
