Gabon: Opposition protest in Libreville November 23 /update 9

Supporters of the opposition party Coalition pour la Nouvelle République are planning to stage a protest in the capital Libreville on Friday, November 23, to denounce constitutional violations and demand the resignation of the Constitutional Court president, Marie-Madeleine Mborantsouo. Protesters are expected to gather at the Rio Crossroads at 15:00 (local time). A heightened security presence as well as localized traffic disruptions are likely. Clashes between protesters and security forces cannot be ruled out. On November 22, a group of women intended to stage a sit-in protest in front of the Constitutional Court but were dispersed by police.

Context

Opposition supporters and civil society groups are denouncing an amendment made to the Constitution on November 14 allowing Vice President Pierre-Claver Maganga Moussavou to lead a Ministry Council amid the temporary absence of President Ali Bongo.

President Bongo is currently recovering after being hospitalized at King Faisal Hospital in Riyadh (Saudi Arabia) on October 24. Reports indicate President Bongo suffered a cerebrovascular accident (CVA). According to the Gabonese government, the president remains able to perform his duties. However, uncertainty over Bongo's health has fomented tensions across the country, already high since the 2016 presidential elections, perceived by many as fraudulent.
