Niger: Zinder to host Republic Day events December 15-20

Zinder will host national Republic Day festivities (Fête du Republique) from Saturday, December 15, to Friday, December 20. Large crowds and an increased security presence are likely during the events. Transportation disruptions are possible, particularly along roads leading into the city.

Context

Republic Day, celebrated on December 18, marks the anniversary of the establishment of the Republic of Niger before it gained full independence from France. Since 2005, it has been celebrated as a national holiday with festivities being held at regional capitals. Celebrations include youth, sports, art, and music festivals and competitions.
