Thousands demonstrate for third-consecutive night in Budapest to protest new laws on December 14; clashes between protesters and security forces possible
Event
A large anti-government demonstration is ongoing near the Parliament building in Budapest on the night (local time) of Friday, December 14. Protesters are gathering for the third-consecutive night to denounce newly-approved labor laws and a judiciary-reform law which critics contend undermines judicial independence. Further protest activities and clashes between demonstrators and security forces, along with associated traffic disruptions in affected areas, are to be expected over the coming hours and days.
Context
Protesters and security forces clashed in the capital on December 12-13, exchanging volleys of tear gas and smoke bombs. Demonstrators, many of whom gathered at parliament, also blocked traffic on one of the bridges spanning the Danube River.
Advice
Individuals in Budapest are advised to avoid all protests as a precaution, monitor the situation, and obey instructions issued by the local authorities.
