Libya: Heavy rainfall floods, closes Benina International Airport (BEN) Dec. 5

Heavy rainfall results in flooding and closure of Benina International Airport (BEN), serving Benghazi, December 5; road closures reported

Warning

Event

Heavy rainfall and flooding in Benghazi on Wednesday, December 5, resulted in the closures of roads along with Benina International Airport (BEN). Officials announced a two-day holiday due to the inclement weather. Lingering transportation and business disruptions are to be expected in Benghazi, including flight delays and cancelations at BEN, over the coming hours.

Advice

Individuals in Benghazi are advised to monitor local weather reports, confirm the status of their flights, and anticipate transportation disruptions. Walking or driving through high or running water can be dangerous; 15 cm (6 in) of running water can knock over an adult.

The security environment in Libya remains complex. Although travel with appropriate security protocols in place is possible, professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel. Inter-militia clashes or shows of force are commonplace, and Islamic State- and Al-Qa'ida-affiliated groups retain freedom of movement throughout large parts of the country.
