The US Geological Survey (USGS) indicates a magnitude-7.4 earthquake has struck approximately 82 km (50 mi) west of Nikol'skoye at 05:01 (local time) on Thursday, December 20. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) has issued a tsunami warning for the coastal areas of Russia within 300 km (186 mi) of the epicenter, including Medny Island and Kamchatka Peninsula. Further aftershocks and tsunami waves are possible.
