A 6.7-magnitude earthquake hit just south of Coquimbo (Coquimbo region) on January 19; no tsunami warning issued

A large earthquake hit just off the coast of Chile's Coquimbo region at approximately 20:32 (local time) on Saturday, January 19. The earthquake measured 6.7-magnitude with a depth of 53 km (33 mi) around 15 km (9 mi) south of the city of Coquimbo. Details are still emerging regarding possible infrastructure damage and casualties. A tsunami warning initially issued immediately after the earthquake was subsequently canceled. Aftershocks are likely in the coming hours and days.
