China: Beijing subway to launch one-day pass

On Sunday, January 13, the Beijing municipal commission of transportation announced that the Beijing subway will offer to passengers a one-day pass, to allow for unlimited metro rail travel, for a 24-hour period. The one-day pass will be available in QR code format. The date for the launch of the pass has yet to be released. Beijing currently implements a metered fare system for subway rides. Passengers can buy single-ride tickets or use a rechargeable fare card for a ride.

Context

Prices of Beijing's subway tickets are currently based on a metered fare system. For the first 6km (3.7 miles) passengers have to pay 0.44 USD (CNY 3), CNY 4 (0.59 USD) are required for a 6 to 12 km (3.7 to 7.5 mi) ride, CNY 5 (0.73 USD) for a 12 to 22 km (7.5 to 13.7 mi) ride, CNY 6 (0.88 USD) for a 22 to 32 km (13.7 to 20 mi) ride, and an extra CNY 2 (0.29 USD) for every additional 20 km (12.4 mi) for a distance overreaching 32 km (20 mi).

Individuals present in China are requested to show their passport in order to buy a ticket and to get access to the train. Furthermore, travelers are advised to remain cautious while taking the train at night as petty theft are common.
