Fiji: Tropical cyclone warning issued January 2

Event

The Fiji Meteorological Service issued a tropical cyclone warning at 08:33 (local time) on Thursday, January 3, for Vanua Levu, Tavenui, nearby smaller islands, and Lau and Lomaiviti group as a tropical depression moves towards the islands. As of 05:00, the system was located approximately 220 km (136 mi) north of Rotuma and moving southeast at 30 km/h (19 mph). Authorities warned that the storm may strengthen into a tropical cyclone within the next 12-18 hours. The storm is forecast to make landfall on Vanua Levu island on Friday, January 4. A gale warning is also in effect for Rotuma. Damaging winds, heavy rain, and flash flooding is possible throughout the region as the storm moves through the area. Transportation disruptions are possible at least through Saturday, January 5.
