A group of students reportedly blocked Suyapa Boulevard outside the National Autonomous University of Honduras (UNAH) in Tegucigalpa on Monday, January 28. According to local sources, the demonstrators lit tires on fire and blocked traffic with stones. Police officers fired tear gas at the students after they refused to leave the area. Further demonstrations are possible in the coming hours and days; additional clashes between students and security forces cannot be ruled out.

UNAH students held a series of protests in late 2018 to demand lower fuel prices and scholarship money. January 28 is the first day of classes at UNAH and the one-year anniversary of the reelection of President Juan Orlando Hernández.
