Libya: Militia clashes leave five dead in Tripoli January 16

Rival militias clash in Tripoli January 16, leaving five people dead and 20 others wounded; similar clashes possible in Tripoli over the coming days

Warning

Event

Rival militias clashed in Qasr Bin Ghashir district of southern Tripoli on Wednesday, January 16, leaving five people dead and 20 others wounded. The skirmish reportedly involved the competing Kaniyat, or 7th Brigade, with the Tripoli Protection Force (TPF) and was in violation of a UN-brokered ceasefire; local sources reported sustained small arms fire in the area. The clashes come after Ghneiwa troops (Abu Saleem Central Security/TPF) detained several members of the Kaniyat on Monday, January 14, near the (inoperational) Tripoli International Airport (TIP) in Qasr Bin Ghashir. Similar clashes between rival militia groups are possible in Tripoli over the coming days.

Advice

The security environment in Libya remains complex. Although travel is possible in some areas (with appropriate security protocols in place), other areas should be considered strictly off limits. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel.
