Saraya Thar Allah group claims roadside bombing attack near A’ali February 11; similar improvised explosive device (IED) attacks possible amid February 14 anniversary of 2011 uprising

Warning

Event

The Saraya Thar Allah group claimed responsibility for a roadside bombing that targeted a military patrol on Sheikh Zayed Highway near A'ali and Salmabad early (local time) on Monday, February 11. Similar militant attacks targeting security forces and government personnel are possible over the coming days, particularly amid the upcoming February 14 anniversary of the 2011 Bahraini uprising.

Some opposition groups have called for anti-government demonstrations on February 14. A heightened security presence and localized traffic disruptions are to be expected around related gatherings.

Context

Anti-government protests erupted in Bahrain on February 14, 2011 (termed the "Day of Rage"), particularly in Shi'a areas, as part of the broader Arab Spring movement. Protesters clashed with security forces, resulting in dozens of casualties.

Advice

Individuals in Bahrain are advised to monitor developments to the situation, avoid all gatherings and protests due to potential violence, report suspicious objects and behavior to police, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities.

In general, various Western governments advise their citizens in Bahrain to remain vigilant while in the country due to the extant terrorist threat. Moreover, IED attacks often target security forces and other government installations; individuals in Bahrain are consequently advised to stay away from sites that are deemed particularly likely to be targeted (e.g. ministries, public buildings, police patrols, military zones, etc.).
