Guinea-Bissau: Violent protests ahead of teacher strike /update 1
Violent student protests erupt to denounce planned teacher strike February 8, 13; avoid all demonstrations

On Friday, February 8, and Wednesday, February 13, students took to the street in the capital Bissau to protest over an impending strike action by teachers. Students reportedly blocked roads with burning tyres, set alight vehicles, and looted shops. Police forces disperse protesters with tear gas and warning shots. Several people were injured in the protests. Calm has returned as of Friday, February 15, as police forces is patroling the capital. However, further protests are possible in the coming days and weeks. As such, the US Embassy in Dakar advised its citizens to postpone travel to Guinea-Bissau until at least February 22.

Unions representing teachers have called for a strike to be organized nationwide starting on Thursday, February 14. Unions have threatened to strike for 30 days to demand better working conditions and higher salaries.
