Guinea-Bissau: Opposition coalitions call for protests Nov. 14-16 to denounce election delays
Opposition coalitions in Guinea-Bissau call for protests Nov. 14-16 to denounce election delays. Violence possible; avoid protests.
The PAI Tera Rank and API Inclusive Patriotic Alliance opposition coalitions are calling for nationwide protests Nov. 14-16 to denounce the postponement of legislative elections. Opposition leaders released a statement Nov. 11 that further details regarding the demonstrations would be released at a later date. The main protests will likely take place in the capital, Bissau. The coalitions met after the Supreme Court of Justice announced legislative elections scheduled for Nov. 24 were postponed without setting a new date.
Guinea-Bissau will also celebrate its independence day and the formation of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of the People (FARP) Nov. 16. Increased security is likely near protest sites. Localized business and transportation disruptions may also occur. Clashes between security forces and demonstrators are possible, particularly if security forces use force to disperse crowds.
Exercise caution while operating in Guinea-Bissau Nov. 14-16. Avoid all gatherings, political events, and concentrations of security forces. If clashes break out, leave the area immediately and take shelter in a secure, nongovernmental building. Heed the advice of local authorities.
