Militants launched an attack on an Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) paramilitary (Basij) base in Nikshahr (Sistan and Baluchestan province) on Saturday, February 2, killing one IRGC member and wounding five others. Jaish Al-Adl, a Salafi-jihadist group that is known to carry out cross-border attacks from Pakistan in Iran's neighboring Sistan and Baluchestan province, claimed responsibility for the assault. The attack comes amid a state-sanctioned, ten-day celebration period commemorating the 40th anniversary of the 1979 Iranian Revolution, which began on Friday, February 1.
Similar militant attacks on security forces are possible in Sistan and Baluchestan province over the near term, particularly as the abovementioned celebration period continues.
