Torrential rains reported on February 17; numerous houses affected due to flooding in Port-Louis

Mauritius has experienced torrential rains between 13:00 and 16:00 (local time) on Sunday, February 17 leading to significant floodings in several neighborhoods of the capital Port-Louis. Several houses were flooded prompting the evacuation of some local residents as well as significant transportation disruptions. Further rain and associated flooding are possible in the coming days.
Context
Mauritius experiences a cyclone season from November to May, during which heavy rains fall on the island and can cause extensive damage.
Advice
Individuals present in Mauritius - especially in Port-Louis - are advised to avoid river banks and other water sources. Remember that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous; 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock you over. Finally, because floodwater may also contain wastewater or chemical products, wear boots and try to avoid any contact with the water. All items having come into contact with the water should be washed and disinfected. Dispose of any food that may have come into contact with floodwater.
