Spain: Metro workers to strike and protest in Madrid March 7-8 /update 1

Event

Four unions have called on Madrid metro workers to launch a partial strike from 12:00 to 15:30 (local time) on Thursday, March 7, to denounce the exposure of metro worker employees to asbestos. Furthermore, a related protest is scheduled to take place in front of the Assembly building starting at 12:00 on March 7.

A 24-hour labor and student strike is also planned for Friday, March 8, in observance of International Women's Day; Madrid metro workers have planned to hold a 24-hour strike on that day. Under Spanish law, workers in all sectors are able to participate in a two-hours work stoppage per shift, though some industries may allow for longer strikes. Significant transportation disruptions as well as nationwide business disruptions are therefore to be expected on that date.

On a related note, the 8M Commission, a feminist organization, is calling for women in Spain to participate in a general strike on March 8. Student groups are also planning to stage protests at 12:00 (local time) across Spain, including at the Puerta del Sol in Madrid. Other protests and public demonstrations are also likely; associated disruptions are expected in the event of demonstrations.

Context

Madrid metro workers have been striking and protesting since June 2018 to demand that the authorities implement appropriate measures for asbestos removal in the metro system.

International Women's Day is celebrated on March 8. In 2018, an estimated 5.3 million people participated in the strike.
