Civilian Aviation Authority authorizes nighttime flights to resume at Mitiga International Airport (MJI) April 9
Event
A spokesperson for Libyan Airlines announced the airline was resuming flight operations at Mitiga International Airport (MJI) on Tuesday, April 9, after Libyan aviation authorities suspended flights at the airport the day prior. On Monday, April 8, MJI suspended operations after a Libyan National Army (LNA) airstrike targeted the airport. The Civilian Aviation Authority reportedly authorized the resumption of nighttime flights until further notice. Officials indicated the first flights will be used to transport those travelers stranded abroad due to the earlier ground stop at MJI.
Context
The LNA launched an advance on Tripoli on April 4. Unity government talks were previously scheduled in Ghadames on April 14-16, but were postponed on April 9 by UN envoy Ghassan Salame due to the recent fighting.
Libya has been divided by rival governments and factions with their own militias and political parties since the 2011 uprising that toppled Muammar Gaddafi. The security situation in Libya remains precarious and the country is likely to remain unstable in the near term amid the ongoing civil war.
Advice
Individuals in Tripoli are advised to monitor developments to the situation, avoid the affected area, and refrain from nonessential movement within the city.
The security environment in Libya remains complex. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel.
