Additional protests may be held in Magas ( Republic of Ingushetia) April 5-9 despite the local government refusing to grant them permission; heightened security measures expected

Warning

Event

Tensions remain high in the Republic of Ingushetia as protesters plan to hold further demonstrations in the capital of Magas from Friday, April 5, through Tuesday, April 9. On Wednesday, April 3, security forces searched the homes of at least five activists who participated in the recent rallies. At least four people have been arrested and sentenced to ten days in jail for taking part in unsanctioned rallies. Ingush authorities have refused to grant permission for the April 5-9 rallies, claiming the organizers did not provide prior notice. Internet access via mobile devices has also reportedly been blocked throughout Ingushetia since Wednesday. A heightened security presence and increased security measures are expected in Magas and other areas of Ingushetia in the coming days, particularly if the unsanctioned protests are held. Clashes between protesters and police officers cannot be ruled out.

Context

Around 10,000 people gathered in Magas on March 26 to denounce a land swap agreement with Chechnya. Demonstrations continued into March 27, despite security personnel forcibly removing the crowds. Regular protests over the agreement have been held since September 2018 after Ingush leader Yunus-bek Yevkurov and Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov signed an agreement to trade contested borderland areas.

Advice

Individuals in Ingushetia are advised to monitor developments to the situation, anticipate localized traffic disruptions and a heightened security presence near protests, and avoid all public demonstrations as a precaution.
