Russia: Indefinite protests in Arkhangelsk to continue April 15

Indefinite protests over planned major landfill in Arkhangelsk ongoing since March 30; protests to continue in the near term

Warning

Event

Hundreds of people have protested in Arkhangelsk since Saturday, March 30, to denounce the planned construction of a major waste deposit, expected to handle garbage from Moscow. Protesters have gathered in Shies (where the site will be constructed), as well as at Lenin Square where protesters have held continued sit-in demonstrations. Several related arrests were made by police. As of Monday April 15, protesters have vowed to continue demonstrating until their demands are met.

Context

The waste deposit will reportedly handle approximately 6 percent of the total volume of household waste produced in Moscow. Conservationists claim the facility will cause significant damage to the environment and contaminate local wetlands.

Advice

Individuals in Arkhangelsk are advised to monitor further developments and avoid all public demonstrations as a precaution.
