A series of bomb threats forced evacuations at over a dozen municipal court buildings throughout St. Petersburg on the early afternoon on Tuesday, April 16. As of 15:51 (local time), at least three courts remained evacuated as an investigation into the origin of the threats continues. A heightened security presence and localized transportation disruptions are to be expected in affected areas over the coming hours.

Context

Bomb threats are becoming increasingly common throughout Russia. In late March, a string of bomb threats forced evacuations at common gathering points (schools, shopping centers, and tourist attractions) across the St. Petersburg area. In February, a similar string of threats forced evacuations at banks and tourist attractions across the region.

In the vast majority of cases, security forces determine there to be no explosive device planted in the location threatened.
