South Africa: Heavy rain in several provinces April 23-24
Heavy rain forecast in several provinces April 23-24; take precautionary measures
Event
As of Tuesday, April 23, heavy rain is forecast to affect several provinces, including the Northern Cape, Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, and Free State provinces, with the most affected areas being the coastal cities of Durban and Margate (KwaZulu-Natal) as well as East London and Port Elizabeth (Eastern Cape). Associated flooding and landslides are possible. Inclement weather conditions are expected to persist until at least Wednesday, April 24. Related transportation disruptions, along with power cuts are possible in the affected areas.
Advice
Individuals present in the affected areas are advised to monitor local weather reports and adhere to any instructions issued by the local authorities. Remember that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult - and that floodwater may contain wastewater or chemical products; all items having come into contact with the water should be disinfected and all foodstuffs discarded.
