Turkey: Remembrance rallies planned in Istanbul April 24

Civil society groups to hold rallies in Istanbul to commemorate Armenian Genocide April 24; localized transportation disruptions expected

Warning

Event

Commemorative events are planned across Istanbul to mark the 104th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide on Wednesday, April 24. Demonstrations are expected at Sultanahmet Square from 12:00 (local time), the Şişli Armenian Cemetery from 14:30, and at Şişhane Square from 19:00.

A heightened security presence and localized transportation disruptions are expected near demonstration sites. Clashes between police and demonstrators cannot be ruled out.

Context

The demonstrations are being held to commemorate the Armenian Genocide, which occurred in the Ottoman Empire in 1915 and resulted in the deaths of an estimated 1.5 million Armenians. The Turkish government, which had long banned public discussion challenging the state's version of the events in 1915, allowed commemorations beginning in 2002. Ankara maintains the deaths were the result of a civil war, during which both Turks and Armenians were killed.

Advice

Individuals in Istanbul are advised to monitor the situation, avoid all public demonstrations as a precaution, and anticipate a heightened security presence and localized business and transportation disruptions near any demonstrations.
