A 5.7-magnitude earthquake struck off the coasts of Fiji and Tonga, some 134 km (83 mi) west-southwest of Vaini (Tonga), early (local time) on Friday, May 31. No damages or casualties were immediately reported and no tsunami warning was issued.

Aftershocks are possible in the affected region over the coming hours and days.  

Advice

Individuals in the affected region are advised to be prepared for aftershocks and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities. In the event of aftershocks, individuals are advised to protect themselves from falling debris if indoors, to move away from windows, and not attempt to leave the building unless there is an immediate danger. If outdoors, move away from tall buildings, utility wires, and streetlights.
