Iran/Iraq: 5.3-magnitude quake hits Iranian-Iraqi border May 11

Event

A 5.3-magnitude earthquake struck 32 km (20 mi) southwest of Halabjah (Halabjah province, Iraq) on Saturday, May 11. Shaking was reportedly felt in the Darbandikhan (Sulaymaniyah province, Iraq) and Ezgeleh (Kermanshah province, Iran) areas. No casualties or significant material damages were immediately reported.

Aftershocks are possible along the Iranian-Iraqi border over the coming hours and days.

Individuals present in the affected region are advised to be prepared for aftershocks and to adhere to any instructions issued by local authorities. In the event of aftershocks, individuals are advised to protect themselves as much as possible from falling debris if indoors (e.g. under a table), to move away from windows, and to not attempt to leave the building unless there is an immediate danger. If outdoors, move away from tall buildings, utility wires, and streetlights.
